The objective of the WERC Task 1 project is to design a low-cost stormwater management system for a selected community that is disproportionately affected by climate change impacts to storms. This community should have a current deficiency of stormwater infrastructure (due to insufficient funding for this infrastructure) and is expected to face more extreme weather events due to climate change. The design focus should be innovative, low cost, and nature based with the potential to manage identified pollutants.
The project location is Joseph City, AZ, which has been identified as a 100-yr FEMA floodplain. The flooding that has impacted residents is primarily overbank flooding from the Joseph City Wash that flows through Joseph City.
