Tasks

Task 1.0: Project Set Up

This task includes developing a Field Safety Checklist and the Lab Binder in order to access the site and NAU laboratories.

Task 1.1: Field Safety Checklist

A Field and Safety Checklist is required by NAU for travel to the site.

Task 1.2: Lab Binder

A lab binder is required to document laboratory methods used for the project.

Task 2.0: Research

Research will be conducted to identify appropriate solidification materials, tailings/binder mix ratios, how to create cylinders for compression testing, compression testing, and TCLP/SLP testing.

Task 2.1: Solidification Materials

Appropriate mix materials and ratios will be identified for each binder material, as well as how to create test cylinders for strength testing.

Task 2.2: Strength Tests

The compression test and tensile test are strength tests that will be researched.

Task 2.3: Leachability Tests

EPA Method 1312: Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP) and EPA Method 1311: Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) are the two leachability tests that will be considered so that an appropriate test can be selected.

Task 3.0 Experimental Design

An experimental matrix detailing how the required parameters will be varied in the experiments will be developed.

Task 4.0 Materials Procurement

Experimental materials will be obtained in this task.

Task 4.1: Obtain Tailings

A site visit will be made to collect the required amount of tailings from each site.

Task 4.2: Obtain Solidification Materials

Suppliers will be identified, and materials will be ordered from the chosen supplier.

Task 5.0 Test Cylinder Creation

In order to perform strength testing, test cylinders of solidified tailings will be created according to procedures identified in Task 2.2. Cylinders will need to cure for approximately 28 days. Access to the NAU Civil Engineering Concrete Laboratory will be obtained to pour and cure the cylinders.

Task 6.0: Experimentation

The cylinders will be tested after they are fully cured through strength testing and leachability testing.

Task 6.1: Strength Testing

Strength testing includes both a compressibility test which tests the cylinder along its axis and tensile test which tests the cylinder along its radius.

Task 6.2: Leachability Testing

Leachability testing will be conducted according to the experimental matrix and will include either the TCLP or the/SPLP test as determined in Task 3.0.

Task 7.0: Data Analysis

Results from the strength testing and leachability tests have been and are being analyzed to determine performance of the solidified materials.

The strength testing data is presented in the following table:

Task 8.0: Project Impacts

Environmental, social, and economic impacts of the project will be evaluated and discussed.
