South Approach

The south abutment ties the bridge to the existing pathway and retain the fill needed to meet the 14 ft clearance. The south abutment is a mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSE wall).  It supports the 38 ft bridge deck and uses metal strips to lower the soil pressure applied to the wall. The abutment has elastomeric bearing pads and  preformed expansion joint filler to cushion the bridge deck to the abutment.
