Bent Design |
The bent consists of three main components: the foundation, the wall, and the shear key. The spread footing foundation prevented the high construction cost of a single drilled shaft as well as deviating from driving piles for a foundation. The 9 x 16 foot foundation is large enough to handle the moments applied by the bridge deck, but small enough so that is does not impact the roadway or wash. The 18 in inch thick wall was designed to withstand the loading from the decks above as well as wind loads. The shear key can handle the wind loading from the deck sections which would tend to move them out of plane. Connections are made with rebar to handle loadings in the longitudinal direction, and bearing pads are placed between the concrete slabs and shear key to allow roller action. |
