Hardware & Software Used
Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) $495.00 (Free for us, provided by sponsor)
DE2 Board
The DE2 Board is used to perform the necessary processes to output the signal through a speaker.
Firstly, the received signal will be channel selected with digital filtering, in order to isolate the desired channel. An easier way to envision this is to picture switching channels on the radio.
The signal is then passed through the FPGA codex and then through the speaker.
We did not actually spend any money on the DE2 board as it was provided to us by our sponsors, Cobham Avionics, Wulfberg division.
Matlab Price Unknown (Free for us, provided by NAU)
Matlab is a numerical computing software program with its own fourth-level programming language. It was used to run many of our initial theoretical simulations and was imperative in completing our initial design.
Altera Quartus II $2995 (Free for us, provided by NAU)
Quartus is an FPGA design software suite created by Altera for their series of FPGA chips. Quartus can do anything from generating VHDL/Verilog code to programming the FPGA itself.
Mentor Graphics ModelSim $945 (Free for us, provided by NAU)
ModelSim is very similar to Quartus II, with the exception that ModelSim is unable to easily program the Altera FPGA boards. However, ModelSim has a significantly improved simulation program that allowed us to easily simulate our VHDL & Verilog code before programming the FPGA.
