Dr. Jared Duval is an assistant professor at the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems at Northern Arizona University. He is also the director of the Playful Health Technology Lab, an interdisciplinary research team whose mission is to design, implement, and study human-computer interaction technologies that improve the experience and effectiveness of meeting or maintaining health goals. Dr. Duval utilizes research through design (RtD) at the intersection of Human Computer Interaction to develop therapy games and playful applications that make health and wellness more sustainable.
Dr. Duval’s work specializes in serious games for health that emphasize human-computer interaction with assistive technology. He is the author of more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and is the creator of three serious games for health.
Dr. Duval holds a B.S. in Computer Science and Information Technology from Western New England University. He also received his Ph.D. in Computational Media from the University of California Santa Cruz, where he was a part of the ASSIST Lab and SET Lab.
Dr. Duval's work has received a Best Paper Honorable Mention at ACM CHI. He is the recipient of the Jack Baskin and Peggy Downes-Baskin Fellowship, a Smile Train Research Grant, an IdeaHub Judges Award, a Blackstone LaunchPad Fellowship, and a two-tim recipient of CITIRS Tech for Social Good Award. Dr. Duval has been invited to a keynote at the Kraw Lecture Series. He is an ARCS Scholar and Vice President of the Games for Health Early Career Committee.
