SPINA
BIFIDA MOBILIZATION PROJECT |
Our
Project: The
product of this project is a fully functioning, self-propelled wheelchair that
is adjustable for children between the ages of 2 to 4. The wheelchair is
designed to traverse various terrains and aid in an active lifestyle. The chair
is designed to fit in the trunk of a car and be portable enough to use at
school.
Our client is a two year old child with spina
bifida named Lucca Hutchison. Spina bifida is a birth
defect that causes the spinal cord to form outside of the spinal column,
resulting in paralysis of the legs and cognitive development issues. Spina bifida is a birth defect that can cause the spinal
cord to form outside of the spinal column, while the severity of the
impairments varies, common symptoms are paralysis of the legs and cognitive
development issues. Children with spina bifida tend
to be restricted to a wheel chair, yet there are few wheelchair designs for
children under the age of four that are affordable for the average family. Our
design is affordable, portable, and easily used by a young child.
