Final Conclusion:
The BBC’s fundamental frequency has been increased from ~13 Hz to ~97 Hz. These values are within the 30 percent margin of error from the FEA results allowed by our client’s specifications. The weight of the beam compressor has been increased from its original weight of 235.9 lbs to a new weight of 257.5 lbs. This is an increase in weight by 8.4 percent, a value that is less than our 10 percent maximum allowable increase in weight. Due to the meeting of these two main specifications, DSK Engineers states that Dr. Penado’s FEA model is a valid representation of the optical device and themodifications are worth implementing to manufacture six final big beam compressors to be installed at NPOI. This will give them increased image resolution and will allow them to see up to 70,000 stars instead of the current 7,000 stars.
Test Results:
Improvements made shown in a frequency versus magnitude
- This graph shows the original beam compressors frequency in blue and our modified beam compressor frequency in maroon.
- This graph clearly shows that we did increase the fundamental frequency of the beam compressor from 13.3 Hz to 97.3 Hz with our added seventh case.
- The added 7th case consisted of two additional vertical support members and had an improvement of 1.4 Hz.
