Winning Design - Flatscreen Frame with #4 Mesh at a 25° Angle

After 96 different tests, the best performing combination for a bar screen was the Flatscreen with a 25-degree angle and a #4 mesh type. This combination is shown on the right. The SolidWorks drawing is also shown below.

Project Impacts

Implementation of the recommended bar screen design would lead to positive and negative social, environmental, and economic impacts for the City of Flagstaff. They are provided below with indicators for whether each impact is positive or negative.

      • Reduced flooding (+)

      • Peace of mind due to significantly less flooding (+)

      • Trash left on Street (-)

      • Negative perception of neighborhood (specifically the Sunnyside Neighborhood) due to large metal bars being placed over culverts (-)

      • Trash collection (+)

      • Preserving channel infrastructure (+)

      • Alterations to natural channel downstream due to it not receiving as many nutrients or organic material from fire debris (-)

  • Economical Impacts

      • Reduced cost of damage to local residences and businesses (+)

      • Reduced maintenance time and cost post floods due to debris removal (+)

      • Construction and upkeep cost of new bar screens (-)
