The design of the project for the parking lot in Saguaro National Park require considering constraints that apply. This development will influence changes to the stormwater and land characteristics; therefore, the project design should consider minimal impact to the natural desert landscape. The constraints of the design project include: the available space for the existing parking lot design, protection and removal of native plants, possess adequate drainage, parking spaces available for horse trailers/trucks, and abide by National Park Service regulations.
The Department of the Interior, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of the Army jointly administers the National Park System. To remove native plants from National Park Service land, the current landowner, an Application for Arizona Protected Native Plants and Wood Removal needs to be relocated, must grant permission. This will play a constraint on the design process of the parking lot because in areas that have high vegetation of Saguaro cactus and Ironwood trees, the design will have to be configured to avoid these plants, or have a removal/relocation plan.
Another constraint that needs to be considered overall this semester on the project would be COVID-19. Because of this the team was not ble to go to the site and preform any field work, this makes it hard on the design due to the face none of the students have been able to travel to the site.
The Saguaro cactus is rare biological plant that provides many benefits to the ecosystems they thrive in. In the photo above, a hawk is perching on top of a Saguaro cactus in Cave Creek, Arizona.

The Ironwood tree is very dense and is considered to be an old-growth plant indicator its environment. The Sororan Desert is home to the Ironwood which is the only place on Earth that it grows.
