Design Requirements
Design Requirements:
Quantifiable Engineering Requirements:
Lifespan: 5 years (± few months)
Temperature control: 0-50°C (± 5°C)
Data access time: ≤ 5 seconds
Ingress protection: No tolerance for entry
Optical system range: 400-1000nm (± 0nm)
Drone carrying capacity: 3.6 lbs; device weight: ~2.5 lbs
Device dimensions: Fit within 10x5x10in space (± 0.5in)
Optics stability: No movement during flight
Customer Requirements:
Durability
Stable internal conditions
Easy access
Environmentally friendly
Spectral observation range: 400-1000nm
Lightweight
Compact
Drone mountable
Operating temperature range: 0-50°C
Testing and Calibration
Test Series for Device Validation:
Fit Test:
Ongoing throughout the semester
Ensured 3D printed enclosure fit hardware correctly
Process restarted with each new request or design change
Optics Alignment Test:
Used red laser and 3D printed jig
Laser aligned in center of aperture lens
Observed laser bending through internal optical system
Heat Test:
Used Thermocouples on lens mount, chip, and internal air
Surface temperature measured for lenses and nylon tip of setscrew
Compared linear expansions to assess potential issues
No issues found
Submersion and Dust Tests:
Submersion: Tub of water
Dust: Leaf blower
Assessed ingress protection provided by O-ring
O-ring kept water out for ~10 seconds, dust out indefinitely
Indicates capability to keep rain/snow out
Optical Drop Test:
Assessed survivability of optics system in case of fall
Survived fall from table height
Damage occurred from greater heights, prompting design changes
Destructive Test on Enclosure:
Pushed enclosure strength by dropping from 6-story parking garage
Enclosure survived fall
Required substantial effort (repeated drop on concrete corner) for total failure
Application
Device Application:
Purpose: Aid in forest research and conservation efforts
Observation Range: 400-1000nm
Encompasses spectral emissive range of forest elements at ~300 Kelvin (~27°C, 80°F)
Elements Emitting Visible Light:
Detectable within specified temperature range
Provides data for research and conservation efforts
