About THE PROJECT
General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA EMS) builds and sends 12U CubeSats to space that fold to a base size of 20 x 20 x 30 cm. The CubeSats are folded to fit into a canister that takes them through the detumble stage and releases them in space. Once the CubeSat exits the canister, a Hold Down Release Mechanism (HDRM) is used to unfold important parts like solar panels and antennas. The HDRM’s purpose is to hold the folded parts in place until actuation occurs which then triggers the release of the parts, allowing them to unfold and lock into place. Only after the parts are fully unfolded and locked, the CubeSat becomes fully functional. For this project students will design a unique HDRM that allows a 12U CubeSat to assume functional position.
