The progress made by GM³ since February 25, 2001 is as follows:  we have chosen a primary design, dimensioned the arms of the design, built a rough prototype, researched the manufacturability of the design and considered the difficulties of using ball joints. 

The design we are focusing on is the “Umbrella” friction anchor.  Mathematical analysis has been done on the arms of this design.  A dimensioned drawing is included in the attachments of this document.  A rough prototype was built to confirm the concept of the design.  The prototype will also be useful in determining the strengths of the springs and their attachment points (see attached drawing for possible attachment points).  The design can be manufactured using standard parts and materials.  Our original design required ball joints but we are now considering a pinned swivel joint instead.  This will reduce the cost and weight, and eliminate difficulties in manufacturing.

Our goals for the next month are to develop a cross section for the “cam” arms, size pins and test for shear-out failure, finalize the design including spring placement, build a working prototype, and test it to failure.  Once the prototype is built and tested minor changes will be made.  A fully functional prototype will be made as is stated in our proposal document.

All team members are working hard and we have accumulated 68 hours out side of class time working on the project thus far.  We are still behind schedule but we feel confident we can complete the project on time.
