Historically, NAU Commencement traffic clogged campus roadways, Interstate 17, and Interstate 40. Idling traffic on interstates is dangerous and poses safety risks to law enforcement, travelers, and emergency responders. The Arizona Dept. of Transportation (ADOT) requested that traffic volumes be collected for NAU graduation to help determine feasible traffic management solutions on NAU Campus to prevent traffic backups onto I-17 and I-40.
