Hydrology
Project used HEC-RAS as the primary hydrolic analysis tool. Stream channel was designed around a bankfull discharge of 80 cfs that was used in the original project. Culvert plunge pools were analyzed using a max culvert discharge of 335 cfs and Bentley CulverMaster was used to analyze energy at the exit of the culverts.
The visual tool above shows the channel in a 3-D representation in HEC-RAS. This allowed us to compare the original project goals to what was currenly there.
Sinuosity goal: 1.2
Actual: 1.12
Entrenchment Ratio Goal: 2.2
Actual: 1.76
Slope Goal: 1-3%
Actual: 1.3%
Above are the shear stresses calculated from the HEC-RAS model. The green moves the desired particle size of gravel while the yellow and red move large particulate such as small and large cobble. New design goal would be to decrease shear stresses.
Design Alternative
The design alternatives were designed with the express goal of lowereing the energy in the upper 1,000 feet of channel as well as at culvert outlets. This was done by adding additional meanders to the channel as well as adding plunge pools made out of gabion mattresses at the exit of the culverts.
The chosen design alternative will inolve disturbed earth. To mitigate erosion the two images will be designs below will be implimented.
Shown below is the gabion mattress design. This was chosen because it will be more durable than a rip-rap design.
