The primary goal for the project was to develop a final product that would raise the bar with respect to innovative concrete canoe designs. To accomplish this goal, the team designed and constructed a form that would serve as both a mold and ASCE’s only practice canoe.By using local products, and acquiring assistance from an experienced woodworker, a wood strip canoe was fabricated. This canoe not only served as a mold and practice canoe, but it also became the carrying coffin for the concrete canoe as it was transported to conference.
While striving for innovation, the team also endeavored to achieve a highly sustainable process.By effectively doing so, the team was able to recycle all materials used in the mold and limit material acquisition to local merchants, thus reducing the carbon footprint due to transportation smog. For a sense of perspective, previous years used Styrofoam as their mold material and discarded its entirety to waste. This year not a single mold material was discarded.
