About Route 66: U.S. Route 66, the "Mother Road", is one of America's most iconic highways.
Established in 1926, it stretched nearly 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica and became a symbol of travel,
opportunity, and adventure. Its small towns, neon signs, diners, and roadside landmarks helped shape classic
American road-trip culture.
Although decommissioned in 1985, Route 66 remains a celebrated historic corridor-especially now as it approaches
its 100th anniversary in 2026. Arizona preserves some of the best surviving segments, offering travelers a chance
to experience vintage architecture, preserved landmarks, and the stories that made the road famous. Even a century
later, Route 66 continues to inspire communities, historians, and visitors from around the world.
