Team Lasso

Team Lasso is made up of a strong group of computer science students at Northern Arizona University. Each team member brings unique skills and interests that contribute to the project.

Greg Andolshek


Greg is a computer science student at NAU, currently completing the final year of his undergraduate degree and looking forward to a spring 2013 graduation. He is very interested in many aspects of computer science, and is looking to pursue a career in game development after graduation. Some upper level division courses in computer science that Greg has taken include the following: Principles of Languages, Automata Theory, Algorithms, Advanced User Interfaces, Software Engineering, Operating Systems, Database Systems and Networking.

Alex Koch


Alex is a computer science major with a minor in math. He has a strong graphics design background as well. This past summer, he worked as an intern at Hewlett-Packard developing a data analysis website for HP’s Inkjet Web Presses. He likes to design easy-to-use interfaces that give users the most control possible over the tasks they are trying to complete. Alex’s current skills include Java, PHP, HTML, JavaScript, MySQL, and Photoshop. His responsibilities for this this project include website design and database development.

Michael McCormick


Michael McCormick is pursuing a second Bachelor's degree in computer science, with an anticipated graduation in the spring of 2013. After graduation, Michael plans to obtain a Master's degree in computer science. Michael's first degree was in physics, and he would like to incorporate his physics background into his future work. Michael has extensive experience in web programming. From May 2011 to May 2012, Michael worked with the National Parks Service to develop a web interface for a Grand Canyon wildlife database. Since May 2012, Michael has been working on an online launch calendar application for the Grand Canyon River Outfitter's Association. The current languages that Michael has experience with include C, C++, C#, Java, HTML, PHP, JavaScript, Scheme, and Prolog. Michael's upper division courses include Automata Theory, Software Engineering, Distributed Systems, Principles of Languages, Computer Networks, Operating Systems, Principles of Database Systems, Algorithms, Computer Security, and Linear Algebra.

Melissa J. Armstrong - Team Sponsor


Melissa J. Armstrong is the Assistant Director for the Global Science and Engineering Program (GSEP) in the Center for International Education. Her responsibilities include advising students, managing program operations, and developing international partnerships. Melissa’s background is in Ecology and Spanish. She has a BS in Environmental Science from the University of Rhode Island and a MA in Teaching Ecology from Northern Arizona University. Prior to joining the NAU GSEP program, Melissa worked for 13 years with the Ecological Society of America (ESA), managing an education program to promote diversity in the ecology profession. During her tenure with ESA, Melissa spent a year in Mexico and month in southern Chile developing and participating in international, interdisciplinary ecology programs. Her research is on student career decisions in a science career pathway, and a pedagogy of inclusion in science programs. Melissa’s superpower is smiling big and laughing often. Her favorite place on earth always has been and always will be Grand Canyon.

Dr. Eck Doerry - Team Mentor


Dr. Doerry is an associate professor in the computer science program at Northern Arizona University. He is also the faculty coordinator for the Global Science and Engineering Program (GSEP) at NAU. The courses Dr. Doerry has taught include Data Structures, Automata Theory, Principles of Languages, and Advanced User Interface Design. His research includes groupware systems, human computer interaction, and online research communities.
