Project Description

The purpose of this project is to evaluate and improve user safety at two of Flagstaff's major intersections: S Milton Rd/W University Ave and S Milton Rd/Route 66. These intersections were selected using the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) network screening which determined the intersections as "hotspots" due to the high-risk of crashes at those locations. A frequency of incidents involving road users and pedestrians indicate additional safety measures are required at both intersections. Practical solutions and improvements were identified to reduce the risk of incidents while maintaining efficiency at both intersections.

Schedule

Regulations and Standards

This project is being completed in Flagstaff, Arizona which is under the jurisdictions of the ADOT, City of Flagstaff, and FHWA agencies. These agencies each have their own specified regulations which our team needs to follow in order to complete the project within regulations.

The timeframe to complete this project is not unlimited and there are multiple project deliverable deadlines which the team needs to meet. This creates scheduling constraints and forces the team to operate efficiently and without setbacks when working on the project.

Intersection Geometry

Both of our project intersections are pre-existing developments which cannot be easily changed. This forces us to generate alternatives which improve the already in place geometry, while maintaining safety and efficiency for all road users.
