Project Description

This project entails designing and constructing a bridge that fits the criteria for the AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition. This bridge will be a 1:10 scale model of a cantilever wildlife bridge. The objective is to use all available resources needed to build a bridge that fits the provided criteria and can withstand the loads to be tested on the final product at the competition. Successful project design requires finding the right materials for construction, using the design requirements for the competition, and completing the construction, design, and testing of the bridge on schedule.

Project Location

Intermountain Southwest Conference (2022), University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Constraints

ASCE Student Competition Rules

The team must comply with the competition guidelines defined by ASCE and AISC. All design specifications must meet the dimension and material parameters outlined in the rules. All materials utilized in the design must be steel and the bridge must pass initial inspection at competition before being allowed to compete. Construction of the bridge must be completed in under 45 minutes on competition day to be eligible for scoring. Lateral and vertical load tests are conducted on each eligible bridge with the lateral loading weight totalling 50 pounds and the vertical loading weight totalling 2500 pounds. If at any point during loading tests the deflection of the bridge exceeds the defined safety parameters of 3/4" for lateral sway and 2 1/2" for vertical deflection, loading must be halted and the bridge will not be eligible for scoring in that category.

Capstone

The team must meet the deadlines for all deliverables required in the capstone course. The deliverables must meet the requirements outlined within the course guidelines.

COVID-19

The team will follow safety guidelines set by NAU and the CDC including social distancing and wearing masks.

Project Impacts

Social

(+) Promotes interaction between students and industry professionals

(+) Competing allows for an exchange of ideas and design methods between schools

(+) Transportation of people, animals, and goods to get to their destination

(+) Bridge connects people in different communities, allowing them to interact for work or recreation

Environmental

(+) Remaining material is transported back to NAU field station for possible reuse

(-) Increases production of steel for project use

(+) Saves animals from possible injuries and/or fatalities resulting from vehicle collisions

(-) Construction process of the bridge consumes large amounts of fuel

Economic

(+) Increases demand for steel goods

(+) Supports local businesses through purchase of materials

(+) Provides work and job opportunities

(-) Decreases use of the highway during construction

(-) Bridge material and construction is expensive
