Project Information

The project has been divided into four main objectives in order to satisfy the goals of the client and the WERC requirements. Project objectives are:

Objective 1 –Project Management

Objective 2 –Determine PPS Characteristics

Objective 3 –Create Landfill Cap Material

Objective 4 –Compete in WERC Competition

Objective one contains all the management tasks that will be completed over the course of the project.  Objective two is determining known PPS characteristics through literature review and laboratory analysis.  Objective three is creating a new cost-effective composite landfill cap system from PPS and other locally available resources.  Objective four is meeting all requirements for competing in WERC.  Laboratory work will either be conducted at NAU environmental engineering and chemistry laboratories, or subcontracted.

Project Constraints

Wolf Engineering is focused on developing a landfill cap system using PPS a main constituent of several layers.  PPS will be amended for use in a cap material by adding regionally available resources.  Cap materials must be repairable to allow for required upkeep every 6 months and flexible enough to allow for heavy machinery to drive over the surface. The following table summarizes the appliciable requlations for a landfill closure cap.

Landfill Cover

Earthen Material (suitable for plant growth)

258.60(a)(3)

The saturated hydrulic conducitivity of the cap is regulated to reduce the amount of water allowed to enter the landfill post closure. The earthen material unsuitable for plant growth is required to support the cap system and provide a hydraulic barrier. The earthern material suitable for land growth allows for the containment of odors and vectors and the revetgitation of the landfill.
