A solenoid is a linear actuator used in many practical applications like car windows. The sponsor, Honeywell, designs and manufactures electromagnetic solenoids. The solenoids consists of a tightly wound coil of wire. When electricity is run through the coil, it produces an electromagnetic field. When the coil is energized, it actuates the magnetic armature, and opens and closes valves.

The team developed a solenoid with the main focus on the durability of the armature and other magnetic components. These components need to withstand the force of a synthetic diamond valve and seat. Aspects of the design include Pulse Width Modulation, ball bearings, and amorphous steel. Pulse Width Modulation, along with Arduino, is used to control and regulate the pressure. Ball bearings are utilized to guide the solenoid components. The amorphous steel is durable and highly magnetically absorbent.
