Our task is to design a battery
containment system for a 1947 Chevrolet pickup that is being converted
to an electric vehicle. The EV will use approximately 500 kilograms (1100
lbs.) of lead acid batteries which will be located in the bed of the pickup
truck, just aft of the passenger compartment. The first objective is to
prevent the batteries from entering the passenger compartment in the event
of a collision. The second objective is to prevent the battery
acid from corroding the vehicle and containment system frames. The
third objective is to provide proper ventilation to prevent the build-up
of hydrogen gas during the recharging process in order to prevent a potential
hazard.
