Project Information

The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is responsible for managing fish in the state of Arizona. A challenge they have been faced with is collecting a high volume of data from rainbow trout fish such as their growth rates, movement, and overall survival. Currently they have scientists going out 3-4 times a year to collect data with specialized tools, but AZGFD wants a way for the everyday angler to be able to gather and update information on these trout.

By creating a mobile application that allows local anglers and guides to collect data, we streamline that process and provide the angler with the ability to obtain that information themselves, without the need to contact a scientist.

Developed Solution

Over the past year, we have worked to develop a cross-platform mobile application for the Arizona Game & Fish Department. This application provides an angler with the ability to view their caught fishes information right on their phones given the PIT ID number as a copy of the global database is cached locally. On top of this, they can update a caught fish's information and cache this update locally on their phone meaning a data connection is not required to view/update entries. We also provide users with the ability to create new entries for any tagged fish not found in the database yet. We hope that our application will encourage more anglers to participate in this data collection program helping further Arizona Game & Fish's ongoing research. Below you will find a demonstration video of our current product.
