Project Purpose

The Big Beam competition, hosted by Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI), is designed to allow engineering students to assess their concrete beam design skills against other participants. Participants in the competition will need to understand and be able to predict the behavior of prestressed concrete beams. This level of understanding is needed in order to design a concrete beam that will be able to withstand a load set by the requirements of the design and analysis competition. This beam must crack above and fail below a specified loading set by the competition host.
