Warning System
Wrong-way warning signs will be implemented at each interchange following the standards provided by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) 2009 Edition. Per the MUTCD 2009 Section 2B.38, WRONG WAY signs may be used as a supplement to the DO NOT ENTER signs. Every constructed rural interchange which follows these standards for signage will have these signs implemented already, however, this signage alone is not enough as wrong-way driving incidents still occur. For this project, the standard WRONG WAY sign will be replaced with WRONG WAY signs customized with added LEDs for increased visibility. Per MUTCD Section 4L.01, these flashing LED beacons will flash at a rate of not less than 50 or more than 60 times per minute. Construction documents will provide guidance to the sign manufacturer for creation of new signs.
To warn the right-way drivers of an incoming wrong-way driver, the team decided to use a dynamic-sign to send warning messages. The dynamic-sign which is being implemented for this project is an LCD display unit that shows a message in the first line displaying “WRONG WAY DRIVER” , with the 2nd line displaying “USE CAUTION!”, where both lines will be flashing. The dynamic sign will be sending the warning messages once a wrong-way driver is detected by both the camera and radar detector. The dynamic sign will be placed both north and south on the I-17 interstate before and after the exit 333 to give time for drivers to prepare for any danger upcoming to them. The system will be powered by a solar generating system that’s connected to the warning, detection, and communication system.
