The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institue (PCI) was founded in 1954 and is a technical institute for the precast/ prestressed concrete structures industry. The PCI Big Beam Competition is a nationwide annual competition open to college level students to participate in between the months of August until June of the following year.
The competition requires that student teams must analyze and determine the structural design and concrete mix porportions for their team's prestressed precast concrete beam. The beam can be no longer than 22 feet and must withstand an unfactored loading of 20 kips, or 20 thousand pounds. The beam is then scored by the following categories:
- Design Accuracy
- Lowest Cost
- Lowest Weight
- Largest Deflection
- Most Accurate Prediction
- Report Quality
- Practicality, Innovation, and Conformance to Code
