Flagstaff Traffic Roundabout

The city of Flagstaff has delegated the task of redesigning the Old walnut Canyon Road / Oakmont Drive and Country Club Drive intersection. The objective of the project is to evaluate, and redesign the intersection. This project is a budgeted project by the City of Flagstaff Capital improvement program for the year of 2018-2019. The intersection is two-way stop controlled in both of the east and west directions. The sight distance in the intersection is poor because of large grades on the southern part. There are multiple technical aspects which need to be taken in consideration when redesigning the intersection which include, the location of the intersection, the advantages and disadvantages of the possible design options, the cost of the different design alternatives, the collected traffic data, and safety analysis.

Project

The design will take place at the intersection of Walnut Canyon Road/Oakmont Drive and Country Club Drive. This is located roughly 1 mile south of interstate 40. Walnut Canyon Road/ Oakmont Drive is a two ways, two-lane road leading into Continental Country Club to the west.

When implementing a roundabout it is important to note whether or not this is the first roundabout in the area. If it is the implementing agency needs to take into account community impact, user needs, and public acceptability. For cost reasons it is also important to keep the roundabout as small as possible while still solving the traffic flow problem
