The Museum of Northern
Arizona (MNA) would like to develop a baseline inventory of its water
resources, Schultz Creek and its watershed and the MNA would like to expand
their knowledge the eastern portion of the property, shown in Figure 1,
which includes a section of Shultz Creek.
This investigation will
provide the MNA with a detailed baseline analysis of the area’s watershed
condition. The project will also identify possible restoration and
enhancement opportunities for Schultz Creek. This analysis will provide a
thorough investigation of the stream condition and identifying enhancement
opportunities. Future restoration and enhancements to the site may be
explored by the MNA.
The Flagstaff area is prone
to wildfires, which significantly alter the drainage characteristics of
watersheds. A wildfire burned a portion of the eastern regions of Kachina
peaks in June 2010, destroying all the protective and effective vegetation
ground cover and organic soil. The fire was followed shortly by flooding to
Doney Park area causing significant damages to homes and property. This
study will benefit residents living in the watershed by helping to quantify
watershed responses to precipitation prior to such changes occurring. The
MNA expressed concerns regarding the flooding caused by the Schultz fire,
given the close proximity of the MNA property to the fire.
